Is there a simple rule of thumb for debt as a beginner?

I'm not an expert, just trying to make personal finance less intimidating. I've been writing down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I'd do differently. Is there a simple rule of thumb you'd use for debt?

I'd think about cash flow, risk and flexibility rather than the perfect answer. The boring setup is what helps a habit survive a busy week.

My starting points are keeping a month of expenses visible in a checking buffer, automating savings on payday, and avoiding any plan that only works when life is perfect. That's from experience and comparing notes with people who stuck with it.

Exactly; the hidden cost is energy

The trap is trying to optimize before you have feedback.
