What would you do first as a new language learner?

I’m looking for a first step that works on an ordinary, tired weekday—not just an ideal Sunday. What would you recommend to someone starting out?

Learn a few local phrases and one apology phrase. People are usually generous when they see you trying. My only addition is to make the first step visible
