Where would you start with personal finance if short on time?

My commute felt stuck, so I started experimenting with saving. The smallest change was the one I kept. Where would you start if you didn't have much time?

I'd think about cash flow, risk and flexibility rather than the perfect answer. A simple version repeated three times teaches you more than a perfect plan you never start.

My starting points: keep a month of expenses visible in a checking buffer, automate savings on payday, and avoid a plan that only works when life is perfect. Come back with what happened; the details will make the next answer better.

Run the numbers on a normal month and a bad month. If the plan only works in the normal month, it is probly too fragile. This would have saved me a lot of trial and error

The trap is trying to optimize before you have feedback. That's from experience and comparing notes with people who stuck with it.
