Explain Like I'm Five · by Ananya Rao · 2026-10-08

Which advice about asking questions did you eventually ignore?

I wanted all the fancy tools, but a notebook, a reminder and a clumsy first draft worked better. In Nairobi, a friend and I noticed that the social part mattered more than a perfect plan. My first try disappointed me, the second went surprisingly well, and the third humbled me.

You’ll learn more from a simple version repeated three times than a perfect plan you never start. That’s what comparing notes with people taught me.

Glad you shared the messy version too.

I learned to focus on the near-term outcome the expensive way.

Make the next step small enough to do today. Momentum usually answers half the question.

My practical advice is to make the next step tiny enough that you can do it today. Momentum usually answers half the question. I would test it for 9 days before deciding

I appreciate the honest middle stage, not just the polished ending. My friend tried it in São Paulo and had the opposite result

that is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. My only addition is to make the first step visible

I would ask what outcome you want in two weeks, not in some ideal future. That makes the choice much clearer. I used to overcomplicate this constantly

This. Exactly this

The Tuesday test is undefeated

Can you expand on that a bit?

I am curious what changed your mind

If two options look equal, choose the one that’s easier to reverse. Start small, keep notes and ask someone with recent experience.

This is the kind of disagreement I like

Respectfully, I see it the other way

The low-effort version is probably the keeper.

This is the kind of useful internet I still show up for. I used to overcomplicate this constantly

Same here. It took me too long to learn

Try it cheaply, keep notes and decide once you have real evidence.

Maya Putri · 1 likes

kind of wild how often cheaply is the whole issue

helpful and not preachy, which is rare. The social part surprised me too
