A gentle rant about fiction and expectations after 17 tries

I had a disappointing first try, a surprisingly good second try, and then a third attempt that taught me humility. So, naturally, I now have opinions.

Context: I am not an expert, just someone trying to make Writing feel less intimidating. I wrote down what worked, what felt awkward, and what I would do differently next time.

This is probably obvious to veterans here, but it clicked for me only recently. editing got easier when I stopped treating every attempt like a final exam

Beautifully put. I needed that reminder today. I keep a note about fiction for exactly this reason

Do you think this would work in a smaller place then Seoul? It reminds me of a very specific conversation near a tiny balcony

This feels like advice from a patient friend. I used to overcomplicate this constantly

What would you change if you started over? I learned that one the expensive way

I would push back gently on the rant part. A little friction removed goes a long way

That is a much better way to say it

Can you expand on that a bit?

That is a good boundary

Small caveat: context changes the answer a lot

I needed the reminder to start smaller

I think both things can be true

Thanks that actually helped

kind of wild how often reminder is the whole issue

my wallet felt that

Now I want a spreadsheet

I appreciate the honest middle stage, not just the polished ending. This is where I would ask one more question before choosing

that is a surprisingly elegant way to frame it. This pairs weirdly well with ramen. Process photos would be fun to see

Interesting. I would like to see how it changes after 5 months. The Melbourne example makes it feel concrete

Mara Fischer · 4 likes

Honestly this is a little too vague to be useful

Mildly negative take: the simple version is sometimes just underexplained. The a family dinner detail changes the whole answer

Nicolás Díaz · 3 likes

I do not have a strong take, but the expectations detail is useful. I keep a note about prompts for exactly this reason

This feels like advice from a patient friend. The the library detail changes the whole answer

really good advice, and it feels doable. For me it came down to the recipe

Anecdotally, this tracks with what I have seen. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability. Great use of light and restraint

that last line is excellent. I would love to see a follow-up after 4 weeks

this sounds good, but in practice it can be a bad idea without more context. I used to overcomplicate this constantly

The vibe here is immaculate. I noticed the same thing in Berlin

Nour Ali · 1 likes

The context helps. Without it I would of assumed the opposite. The Berlin example makes it feel concrete

this is useful for some cases, but terrible advice if the stakes are high. I would write it down before changing anything else

Wonderful detail. It makes the whole thing feel real. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me

That is a good question for people with more experience than me. The 4-minute rule is underrated
