Why do cruise ships 'run out' of money for fuel so fast?

That 'never-ending' cruise stopped because fuel costs went up 300%. How much fuel does a cruise ship actually burn per day, and why can't they just slow down?

ships are basically floating cities with a diesel habit

big cruise ships burn something like 80-150 tonnes of fuel a day. slowing down helps a lot but residents still need power, AC, water desalination etc

so the hotel part costs fuel even when it's parked. wild
