Subaru is going EV-only in Europe, gas cars are on the way out

electrek.co

Electrek reports Subaru will stop selling gas cars in Europe and offer only EVs there. That's a big move for a brand whose identity was built on boxer engines and all-wheel drive, and Subaru hasn't exactly been seen as an EV leader. It's probably driven by European regulations as much as anything, which makes you wonder if the lineup will be compelling enough to keep loyal buyers. Do you think Subaru fans in Europe follow them, or switch brands?

I drive an outback in rural norway. honestly an EV outback would be perfect here with all the charging we have

norway is basically the easy mode for EV adoption

the Solterra was basically a Toyota bZ4X. hope the lineup gets more of its own identity

it was a fine car but nothing about it felt Subaru

subaru owners are loyal to a fault. if it's still a wagon with roof rails they'll buy it

and a dog in the back seat in every ad

AWD with dual motors is honestly a great fit for the Subaru brand if they lean into it

symmetrical AWD finally becomes literally symmetrical

regulations are pushing everyone this way in the EU anyway. Subaru is just making it official sooner

yeah, better to do it on your own terms than be forced last minute

Subaru's european sales are tiny compared to the US so this might be easier for them than it sounds

which also means Europe is a test market and not where they'll care most

Emma Tremblay · 6 likes

probably, it's a low-risk place to test going all electric

no more boxer rumble 😢

Noura Alotaibi · 0 likes

the rumble mostly came from unequal length headers and they got rid of those ages ago

curious if any other mid size brands follow, or if Subaru just has nothing else to sell there
