16 years later, the deep sea around Deepwater Horizon still isn't bouncing back

e360.yale.edu

Yale e360 reports that deep sea life near the Deepwater Horizon spill site shows few signs of recovery even 16 years after the disaster. Surface recovery tends to get the headlines, but the deep ocean is cold, dark and slow, so damage there may persist far longer than we assume. It's a sobering reminder that cleanup timelines for spills might be measured in generations rather than years. Should this change how we think about deepwater drilling risk?

good to see long term monitoring still being funded at all. that's usually the first thing cut

long-term ecology studies are so undervalued, this is exactly why they matter

remember the dispersant debate. wonder if that's part of the story here

the article doesn't go much into causes from what I saw, would like to know more

deep sea ecosystems run on such slow timescales. 16 years is nothing down there

Benjamín Rojas · 4 likes

some deep corals are hundreds of years old, so yeah

Elif Yılmaz · 8 likes

this should be baked into how drilling permits are priced but I doubt it will be

Noah Miller · 0 likes

insurance markets pricing it in would be a start

the surface recovery stories always felt like they were letting everyone off the hook

beaches look fine so people assume it's over

reading this makes me sad and mildly angry in equal parts

same. it's one of those stories that just sits with you

practical question, is there even any way to help recovery that deep or do we just wait

Solar Orbit · 6 likes

as far as I know mostly waiting. you can't really restore a seafloor 1500m down

which is kind of the scariest part
