Gemini is coming to cars via Android Auto, and it'll be more personalized

theverge.com

Google is bringing a more personalized version of Gemini to cars through Android Auto. In-car voice assistants have historically been some of the most frustrating ones, so there's a lot of room for an LLM to improve things. The 'personalized' part is what I'd want details on though, since a car knows where you go and when. Would you actually use a conversational assistant while driving, or is this a distraction risk?

voice is honestly the best interface for driving. if it can handle messy requests like 'find a gas station on the way that isnt a detour' that'd be great

that exact query fails on every assistant I've tried

as long as it doesn't try to explain my route choices to me like a disappointed parent

'are you sure you want to take the toll road again?'

anything is better than the current 'sorry I didn't get that' loop when I ask it to play a song

asking for one specific song and getting a podcast about the band is my daily experience

my car is 12 years old and the only ai it has is me

same, my cars assistant is a phone mount and a prayer

Curious how it handles bad connectivity. Half my commute is dead zones and cloud assistants just die there

good question, rural drivers are always an afterthought

personalized + car location history is a combo I'm not thrilled about

yeah I'd want very clear controls on what it remembers

google and clear privacy controls, name a more iconic duo

I'm worried about the chatty part. I don't need a conversation, I need short answers while I merge onto the highway

yes, please let me set it to 'terse mode'
