JPEG XL vs AVIF for web use-cases: is it time to switch?

jakearchibald.com

Jake Archibald compares JPEG XL and AVIF for real web scenarios. AVIF has wide support but slow encoding; JXL has nice progressive decoding and lossless JPEG recompression. What are you shipping in production today?

Browser support is the whole story. Everything else is academic.

Fair, but its been 'academic' for like 5 years now

Still using WebP with AVIF for hero images. Encoding time for AVIF kills our build.

We moved encoding to a queue on upload, builds are fast again

Lossless JPEG recompression alone saves us a ton of storage on the old archive.

Anyone benchmarked decoding cost on low-end Android? That's where I get bitten.

JXL progressive decode is genuinely great for slow connections. Wish all browsers shipped it.

Just use a CDN that does format negotiation and stop thinking about it.

Until the bill arrives 😬

I read the post twice and still shipped JPEG. Don't judge me.
