How do you keep a long distance friendship alive once everyone's schedules get busy?

My closest friend from college moved across the country 3 years ago and we've slowly gone from daily texts to maybe once a month. We both still care about each other but life (jobs, kids, etc) just eats the time. Looking for actual practical systems that have worked for people, not just 'try harder'.

standing recurring call, even just 20 min biweekly, on the calendar like any other appointment. removes the 'finding time' friction entirely

we started a shared voice memo thread instead of texts, way lower pressure than a scheduled call and feels more personal than texting

honestly accepting the friendship will look different now instead of mourning the old version helped me more than any system

this is underrated advice, grief for the old dynamic is real and worth acknowledging

we do an annual trip, just the two of us, no partners no kids. one concentrated weekend a year keeps the bond strong somehow

shared google doc where we both just dump random thoughts/links/memes whenever, async and zero pressure to respond immediately

honestly some friendships are seasonal and thats okay too, doesnt mean it wasnt meaningful, dont force guilt onto yourself

we play an async turn based game together (like words with friends), gives a low effort daily touchpoint without needing real conversation

sending random voice notes when something reminds me of them has kept my long distance friendship going better than any scheduled call tbh
