Wearable recovery scores (HRV, sleep, readiness) — actually useful or just another number to be anxious about?

Ive started letting my ring's 'readiness score' dictate whether i train hard or take it easy that day and im wondering if im just outsourcing body awareness i should be building myself, or if the data genuinely catches things i wouldnt notice subjectively.

the data is useful as ONE input but becomes a problem the moment you follow it blindly over how you actually feel, ive seen people skip great training days because of an arbitrary low score

hrv specifically does catch early illness/overtraining before i feel it subjectively, caught a cold coming 2 days early more than once from a hrv dip alone

i switched from checking the score every morning to just reviewing trends weekly, removed the daily anxiety while keeping the useful long term signal

the algorithms behind these scores are proprietary black boxes honestly, i trust the raw hrv/sleep data more than the composite 'readiness' score they package it into

outsourcing body awareness is a real risk, i think the healthiest use is cross referencing the score against how you actually feel, not replacing one with the other

these devices are genuinely more useful for people who chronically overtrain/under-recover than for people who already have good body awareness, know which camp you're in
