Sustainable fashion brands vs fast fashion: has the price gap actually gotten better or worse over time?

Feels like sustainable options have gotten more expensive relative to fast fashion over the last few years rather than converging like everyone hoped would happen as the industry matured. Anyone tracking this more rigorously than my anecdotal impression?

the gap genuinely hasnt closed much, raw material costs for sustainable fabrics are still significantly higher and fast fashion keeps finding new ways to cut costs further down

secondhand/thrift is honestly the actual answer for the price-conscious sustainability crowd at this point, not new sustainable brands which remain a premium category

worth noting 'sustainable' branding is wildly inconsistent, some of these brands arent meaningfully more sustainable than fast fashion, just better marketed, greenwashing is rampant

cost per wear math favors sustainable brands even at the higher upfront price if the garment actually lasts multiple times longer, which is a real if harder to see advantage

labor costs are the bigger hidden factor in this price gap conversation that doesnt get discussed enough compared to just material costs

rental and resale platforms for higher end sustainable pieces have been a decent middle ground for me personally, gets access without the full upfront cost
