What actually helped you build a consistent exercise habit after years of stop-start attempts?

Ive started and quit working out probably 15 times in my adult life. Always goes great for 3 weeks then life happens and its gone for 6 months. What actually made it stick for people who finally got consistent?

lowering the bar way more than feels necessary, 10 minutes counts, showing up matters more than intensity when youre building the habit itself

tying it to an existing habit helped me a ton, i workout right after my morning coffee every single day, no decision making required

found a workout buddy who would actually be disappointed if i bailed, social accountability beats willpower for me every time

stopped relying on motivation entirely and just scheduled it like a work meeting, motivation is unreliable but a calendar block isnt

picking something i actually enjoyed (climbing) instead of what i thought i 'should' do (running) made a bigger difference than any habit trick

tracking streaks in an app gamified it enough for my brain to not want to break the chain, sounds silly but worked for me

the 3 week collapse pattern you describe is textbook motivation-based exercise, systems beat motivation long term every single time

gave myself permission to miss a day without quitting entirely, the all-or-nothing mindset was what actually killed my past attempts
