How do you actually keep a long term relationship exciting without it feeling forced?

Married 6 years, still love my partner deeply but the 'spark' people talk about in new relationships obviously isnt the same thing anymore and im realizing that chasing it is the wrong goal. What actually works for you two to keep things feeling alive without turning every week into a scheduled 'date night' chore?

honestly the biggest shift for us was treating curiosity about each other as an ongoing project, people change over years and you have to keep learning them

date nights feeling forced usually means the activity itself is the problem not the concept, try something neither of you has done before instead of dinner again

6 years in myself and i think the 'spark' framing is honestly a trap, deep comfort and genuine partnership is a different kind of good, not a lesser one

we started a small tradition of trying one new recipe together every month, low stakes but gives us a shared project outside of just logistics of life

couples therapy isnt just for crisis moments, we did a few 'tune up' sessions and it helped us name things we couldnt articulate ourselves

physical affection outside of sex matters more than people admit, just holding hands or a hug for no reason keeps something alive imo

honestly sometimes its less about adding excitement and more about removing resentment buildup from unequal mental load, worth checking that first

married 11 years and the thing that worked for us was genuinely separate hobbies, having something to come back and talk about keeps conversation fresh
