Married 7 years and we just started actually splitting mental load fairly — what changed everything for us

Took us way too long to realize 'helping' isn't the same as owning tasks fully. Switched to each of us owning entire categories (I own meal planning end to end, she owns finances end to end) instead of splitting individual tasks, and the resentment dropped almost overnight. Anyone else find a system that actually worked after years of friction?

the 'ownership' framing over 'splitting tasks' is such an underrated shift, we did the same thing and it fixed so much silent resentment

yes! splitting individual tasks just creates a manager/helper dynamic even when you dont mean it to

we tried a shared task app for a while, lasted about 3 weeks before someone stopped checking it lol, ownership by category just works better long term

honestly took us a huge fight to even have this conversation properly, wish we'd done it years earlier like you did

what about stuff that doesnt fit neatly into a category, like random house projects, how do you two handle those?

we just call those out explicitly in a weekly 10 min check in, keeps it from falling through the cracks

this is basically what my therapist recommended too, 'full ownership not 50/50 split' is apparently a well known framework

single person reading this taking notes for future relationships lol, feels like genuinely useful advice

the resentment really does build silently over years, glad you two found something before it became a bigger issue
