Explain Like I'm Five · by Solar Mango · 2026-09-03

Is there a simple rule of thumb for explainers without fancy tools?

I know this is a tiny sample size, but after 5 attempts the pattern is pretty clear. When I keep the setup simple, I actually follow through

Yes, but I would approach it in a small, testable way rather then trying to solve everything at once. You will learn more from a simple version repeated three times than from a perfect plan you never start.

- Start small and make the next step obvious.
- Keep notes so you can compare what worked.
- Ask someone with recent experience, not just strong opinions.

That should give you a solid first pass

That sounds great until you add children/pets/deadlines

that is fair, but I still worry about maintenance

This feels like advice from a patient friend. I care less about the perfect answer and more about repeatability

That is the part people skip

good clarification — I read it differently at first

This made me smile more than expected. The Istanbul example makes it feel concrete. This is kinder advice than most of the internet manages

Yes but I would approach it in a small, testable way rather than trying to solve everything at once. The trap is trying to optimize before you have feedback.

- Start small and make the next step obvious.
- Keep notes so you can compare what worked.
- Ask someone with recent experience, not just strong opinions.

Hope this helps!

My version of this was messier, but the conclusion was similar. Honestly, the simplest version wins for me
